STORM sponsors Stormwater Conference The emergence and successes of the Stormwater Industry Association has mirrored that of STORM_CONSULTING. Both commenced in the late 90s and have assumed prominent and influential roles in the industry. Therefore it was fitting that STORM sponsor the SIA 2006 Conference (themed "Soil & Water: too good to lose"), held at Parramatta in late June. STORM was a major sponsor of the conference and also hosted a workshop on Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD), and led parts of the field study tour around WSUD sites in Sydney, including:
A highlight of the Conference was the Awards of Excellence in Stormwater with Directors Rod Wiese and Mal Brown of STORM presenting the winners with their awards, whilst rubbing shoulders with ABC Radio's Adam Spencer, who was the event's guest speaker. Conference Proceedings and details may be obtained from info@stormwater.asn.au or phone the SIA's Bronwyn Davies on 1300 76 11 22. Next year's Conference will include stormwater harvesting and reuse as a theme and will be held in Wollongong. A call for papers will be issued in the SIA Bulletin in August this year and information updates will be available at www.stormwater.asn.au/nsw/events.asp |

Note: Option shown may not reflect what is ultimately constructed Melbourne Water, under its Lower Yarra Stormwater Quality Program is developing the capacity of local government in the design and delivery of Water Sensitive Urban Design projects. Melbourne Water have linked STORM_CONSULTING with City of Melbourne, Stonnington and Yarra Councils to work with staff from within these Councils to conceptualise and then develop projects that deliver real water quality benefits. The intent of the Program is for these councils to adopt Water Sensitive approaches in their everyday projects, and for this to be reflected throughout Council's business. To date, STORM has worked with Stonnington Council to design a new Council Depot that achieves 80% mains water reduction and very high levels of pollutant capture using a treatment train incorporating rain tanks and bioretention. Other projects include car park retrofits with bioretention systems. Melbourne Water's Phil Edwards said "We believe that STORM_CONSULTING play an integral role in facilitating change in the way local government manage stormwater for the health of our waterways". He added "We are pleased with the progress made by STORM in the first half year of the Lower Yarra Stormwater Quality program". For more information email Rod Wiese. | |

Industrial subdivision's WSUD under construction When CABP Group bought the Weathertex Factory on the Pacific Hwy near Port Stephens, the surrounding lands were considered un-developable. Constraints to development included the presence of a shallow drinking water aquifer (Hunter Water's resource) and flooding across the floodplain of Windeyers Creek. Through complex engineering planning and design, STORM was able to demonstrate to regulators that an industrial subdivision could be built on the land with no effect on the water quality of the aquifer, and no increase in flooding. The result is a unique factory subdivision that boasts a Total Water Cycle Management approach. Stage 1 totalling 12 Hectares has been constructed. The requirements on factory owners to install rain tanks and infiltration trenches has caused no loss in demand with the lots proving very popular. A key to reducing flooding and protecting groundwater is the collection of roof water for use within factories, but with overflow of this clean water going directly into the sand aquifer. Bioretention basins and swales combine with more traditional stormwater elements to treat stormwater runoff from the factories and roads. This is the first full-scale project in Australia designed specifically to protect both groundwater and surface water resources. Paul Michael, Principal of CABP Group stated "Apart from demonstrating the ultimate in sustainability, STORM's work has enabled my company to develop this land in an area of strong demand". "It is a win-win", he said. |
