Sustainable Subdivisions

Elambra Estate, Gerringong. 230 lot residential community

Kiama Council wanted a subdivision that achieved the ultimate in sustainability while also turning a decent profit.  They did not want end-of-pipe wetlands to manage water quality and for detention as this would take up to much valuable space on a steep site.  In response, STORM devised a Water Sensitive Urban Design subdivision that included: rain tanks plumbed for toilets and hot water; filter strips and bioretention systems; regenerated stream channels; and a clever linear sand filter within the road reserve that acts as an end-of-pipe device.  This subdivision became the test case for plumbing roof water back into properties with the Sydney Water network.  It achieves excellent results in protecting downstream wetlands and beaches and was awarded the 2004 Water Sensitive Urban Design Award as judged by the Stormwater Industry.
